Garmin Fenix 9 Pro | 43, 47 and 51 mm, with or without inReach

Garmin Fenix 9 Pro

The Garmin Fenix 9 Pro is a multisport GPS smartwatch with a full titanium case. It comes in 43, 47 and 51 mm. The panels measure 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 inches by case size. Resolution rises from 416 x 416 to 466 x 466. Peak brightness is up to 3,000 nits. Smartwatch battery runs up to 10 days, 18 days or 31 days. A sapphire lens, a 10 ATM rating and a 40 m dive rating are common to all three. The LED flashlight has white, red and green settings. Every size is sold as a standard watch or as an inReach watch with LTE and satellite messaging.

The inReach version is a separate model with its own part number. It adds LTE and satellite coverage for two-way messaging, voice calls without a phone, LiveTrack, Garmin Locate and interactive SOS. There is no way to switch it on later, so pick it at the point of purchase or take the watch without it. The titanium case and titanium bezel arrive on every size, and so do the 64 GB of memory and the multicontinent TopoActive maps. The 1.5-inch, 466 x 466 panel belongs to the 51 mm alone, which makes it the largest display in the Fenix 9 family.

Case, panel and connection

The four things a Pro buyer is actually paying for

A titanium case, a panel that grows with the diameter, an optional satellite radio and a battery figure that nearly triples between the smallest and largest case. Everything below is broken out by size, because none of it is one number.

The first titanium Fenix case
Every Pro size is built the same way: titanium case and titanium bezel together, behind a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens, with leakproof inductive metal buttons and Garmin's testing to U.S. military standards for thermal, shock and water resistance. With the silicone band fitted the 47 mm weighs 78 g and the 51 mm weighs 99 g.
78 g at 47 mm
A different panel in every size
Unlike the standard Fenix 9, no two Pro sizes share a display. The 43 mm runs a 1.3-inch AMOLED, 33.0 mm across at 416 x 416. The 47 mm runs a 1.4-inch, 35.6 mm across at 454 x 454. The 51 mm runs a 1.5-inch, 38.1 mm across at 466 x 466, which is the largest and highest resolution screen in the range. Peak brightness is up to 3,000 nits.
466 x 466 at 51 mm
inReach on its own part number
inReach variants add LTE and satellite coverage for two-way messaging through the Garmin Messenger app, voice calls over LTE without a phone in your pocket, LiveTrack location sharing, Garmin Locate so trusted contacts can poll your last known position, weather forecasts over LTE or satellite, and interactive SOS to the Garmin Response coordination center, which is staffed 24/7. An inReach plan is required and Garmin offers a 30-day trial. Emergency SOS messaging stays free for up to 12 months even if the plan is suspended.
30-day trial
Ten days, eighteen days, thirty-one days
Smartwatch mode is rated at up to 10 days on the 43 mm, up to 18 days on the 47 mm and up to 31 days on the 51 mm. GPS activity tracking in normal mode runs up to 18, 32 and 56 hours in the same order, and max battery mode reaches up to 50, 87 and 151 hours. Turning on inReach costs battery while you are recording: activity mode with LTE LiveTrack running is rated at up to 9 hours on the 43 mm, up to 16 hours on the 47 mm and up to 27 hours on the 51 mm.

Common to every Pro

Eight features that do not depend on the size you pick

Case size sets the panel, the battery, the weight and the band range. The software, the sensors and the 64 GB of memory are identical whichever Pro you buy, inReach or not.

Choosing a size

How the three Pro sizes measure up

On the Pro every size gets its own display, so the size decision changes more than it does on the standard Fenix 9. Start with wrist circumference, because a band that will not close properly changes what the optical heart rate sensor can read, then weigh screen against battery against grams.

  • 43 mm case: 43 x 43 x 13.3 mm | 1.3-inch (33.0 mm) AMOLED at 416 x 416 | silicone band fits 108-182 mm | up to 10 days in smartwatch mode | up to 18 hours of GPS activity
  • 47 mm case: 47 x 47 x 13.8 mm | 1.4-inch (35.6 mm) AMOLED at 454 x 454 | 78 g with the silicone band, 56 g case only | silicone band fits 125-208 mm | up to 18 days in smartwatch mode | up to 32 hours of GPS activity
  • 51 mm case: 51 x 51 mm | 1.5-inch (38.1 mm) AMOLED at 466 x 466 | 99 g with the silicone band, 73 g case only | silicone band fits 127-210 mm | up to 31 days in smartwatch mode | up to 56 hours of GPS activity
  • Leather band wrist ranges run 108-175 mm at 43 mm, 132-210 mm at 47 mm and 135-213 mm at 51 mm
  • In max battery mode GPS activity tracking reaches up to 50 hours on the 43 mm, up to 87 hours on the 47 mm and up to 151 hours on the 51 mm
  • Battery by mode, given as 43 mm / 47 mm / 51 mm: low power watch mode up to 15 / 24 / 42 days | GPS activity in normal mode up to 18 / 32 / 56 hours | activity with music up to 7 / 13 / 22 hours | extended battery up to 22 / 37 / 65 hours | max accuracy up to 15 / 26 / 45 hours | expedition mode up to 10 / 18 / 31 days
  • Choosing an inReach variant costs recording time: activity mode with LTE LiveTrack is rated at up to 9 hours on the 43 mm, up to 16 hours on the 47 mm and up to 27 hours on the 51 mm
  • Identical in all three: titanium case and bezel, sapphire crystal lens, 10 ATM with a 40 m dive rating, 64 GB of memory, and Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi connectivity

Maps and terrain

The biggest map in the range lives on the Pro 51 mm

At 38.1 mm and 466 x 466 the Pro 51 mm panel is the largest and densest Garmin puts in a Fenix 9, and mapping is the screen that gains most from both. The mapping data and the routing tools themselves are the same in every Pro size, so this is a question of how much trail you see at once.

  • Multicontinent TopoActive maps preloaded, with further regions downloadable over Wi-Fi
  • NextFork map guide shows the name of the trail at the next intersection and how far away it is
  • Dynamic round-trip routing turns a target distance into suggested loops and rebuilds one to the same mileage if you leave the route
  • ClimbPro breaks a loaded course into current and upcoming climbs, PacePro manages pacing against terrain, and grade-adjusted running pace corrects for gradient
  • Up Ahead keeps selected checkpoints such as aid stations in view, and courses can be followed with turn-by-turn directions
  • Multi-band GPS across GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou, with SatIQ deciding how much positional accuracy is worth the battery at any moment
  • Altimeter, barometer and 3-axis electronic compass on board, plus a thermometer and skin temperature sensing
  • SkiView maps with run names and difficulty ratings for more than 2,000 resorts, and CourseView maps for more than 43,000 golf courses, both preloaded

The flashlight and the rest of the hard-use kit

The green flashlight setting is one of the small things that separates a Pro from a standard Fenix 9. Green light is what fishing and hunting crews already carry for reading a chart or a map at night without flooding the scene. The rest of this list is the part of the watch that has to survive being used badly.

  • Dimmable LED flashlight with white, red and green illumination; the standard Fenix 9 gives white and red only
  • Red shift mode and colour shift adjust the interface for night use, and a large font option makes the data pages readable at a glance
  • Titanium case and bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens, and leakproof inductive metal buttons that work with wet or gloved hands
  • Tested by Garmin to U.S. military standards for thermal, shock and water resistance, with a 10 ATM water rating
  • Built-in depth sensor and a 40 m dive rating, supporting single-gas scuba and apnea activities with Nitrox from 21 to 40 percent oxygen
  • Built-in speaker and microphone for calls at the wrist with a paired phone, voice notes, and voice commands passed to your phone's assistant
  • 64 GB of memory holds maps, apps and up to 7,000 songs from Spotify, Deezer or Amazon Music for phone-free listening, where the music service may require its own subscription

Fenix 9 or Fenix 9 Pro

The Pro adds a titanium case, a green flashlight setting, a 3,000-nit panel and the inReach option. The Fenix 9 covers the same three case sizes without them.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Four things. A titanium case, where the Fenix 9 has a titanium bezel over a fiber-reinforced polymer case. A green setting on the LED flashlight alongside white and red. A panel rated at up to 3,000 nits, and a larger 1.5-inch, 466 x 466 display on the 51 mm against the Fenix 9 51 mm's 1.4-inch, 454 x 454. The Pro also has the inReach option with LTE and satellite. Battery is close but not the same: the Pro is rated at up to 10, 18 and 31 days by size against 10, 16 and 29 on the Fenix 9.
A built-in LTE and satellite radio. It carries two-way messaging through the Garmin Messenger app, voice calls over LTE with no phone involved, LiveTrack location sharing, Garmin Locate so trusted contacts can request your last known position, weather forecasts over LTE or satellite, and interactive SOS to the Garmin Response coordination center, which is staffed 24 hours a day, every day. Satellite is what keeps the messaging and SOS working where there is no cell coverage at all. The battery cost comes down to one figure: activity mode with LTE LiveTrack running, rated at up to 9 hours on the 43 mm, up to 16 hours on the 47 mm and up to 27 hours on the 51 mm. Compare that with normal GPS activity mode on the same cases at up to 18, 32 and 56 hours and you can see roughly half the recording time goes to keeping the connection live. This applies while LiveTrack is broadcasting; the watch's other battery modes are unchanged.
An inReach plan is required for the messaging, tracking and SOS features to work, and Garmin offers a 30-day trial. One thing worth knowing before you suspend a plan for the off-season: Garmin keeps emergency SOS messaging free for up to 12 months even while the plan is suspended. Adding inReach to a watch that came without it is not possible. inReach is a separate SKU with its own part number. The radio hardware is either in the watch you bought or it is absent, and no software update adds it. If satellite messaging is something you might want within the life of the watch, buy the inReach variant at the start; the plan itself can be started, suspended and restarted later.
The matrix is sparse, so read it before you fall in love with a colour. Only carbon gray DLC titanium with the black and pebble gray silicone bands spans all three sizes. The 43 mm has its own palette: titanium with shell pink and autumn orange, autumn gold titanium with cream and French gray, and titanium with fog gray and dark sandstone. The 47 mm and 51 mm share a different palette: titanium with autumn orange and spark orange, and titanium with graphite and black. None of the 43 mm colours carry over to the larger cases and none of the larger-case colours come down to 43 mm. One colourway is inReach only: titanium with the walnut leather band, at 47 mm inReach and 51 mm inReach, with no standard version in either size. It is also the only leather colourway in the lineup; every 43 mm colourway is silicone. Every other colourway is offered in both a standard and an inReach SKU within its own size.
Start with wrist circumference, then weigh screen against battery against grams. Every Pro size carries its own display: 1.3-inch at 416 x 416 on the 43 mm, 1.4-inch at 454 x 454 on the 47 mm and 1.5-inch at 466 x 466 on the 51 mm, so the largest case is also the largest screen, which is not true of the standard model. Battery runs up to 10, 18 and 31 days in smartwatch mode across the three, and the 47 mm weighs 78 g with the silicone band, the 51 mm 99 g. Anything below 125 mm of wrist means the 43 mm is your only Pro, and it is the size cut for smaller wrists.
The case and the bezel are both titanium on all three Pro sizes. The standard Fenix 9 puts a titanium bezel and a titanium rear cover on a fiber-reinforced polymer case body instead. The lens is scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on both models.
Peak brightness is up to 3,000 nits. The flashlight does have the green setting: the Pro's dimmable LED flashlight gives white, red and green, where the standard Fenix 9 gives white and red. Red preserves night vision; green is the colour a lot of night fishing and hunting kit already uses for reading maps and gear without lighting up the whole area.
All Pro sizes use Garmin's QuickFit quarter-turn mount, so bands come off without tools. The 43 mm Pro includes a 20 mm QuickFit band. For the 47 mm and the 51 mm, buy bands listed against that exact case size. A leather wrist range is published for all three case sizes, but only one colourway ships on leather: titanium with the walnut leather band, at 47 mm inReach and 51 mm inReach. There is no leather colourway at 43 mm in either connectivity, and none at any size without inReach. On a silicone SKU you would be fitting an aftermarket QuickFit band.
It is rated for diving within its rated limits, identically in all three sizes: a 40 m maximum operating depth, a 10 ATM water rating, a built-in depth sensor, single-gas scuba and apnea dive activities, Nitrox support from 21 to 40 percent oxygen, a 3-axis dive compass, a dive planner, ascent and descent rate indicators, and dive logs that sync to the Garmin Dive app. The leakproof inductive metal buttons are part of how that rating is held. On the ECG, the Garmin ECG app is not available in all regions and is intended for adults aged 22 years and over. It is capable of recording an ECG similar to a Lead I ECG and detecting the presence of atrial fibrillation or normal sinus rhythm. Regional availability is worth confirming before you count on it. Separately, Pulse Ox reports blood oxygen saturation and is not a medical device, is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition, and is not available in all countries. Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate, HRV status, sleep coach, Body Battery and training readiness are on every Pro regardless of size.
